There are more microbes in our gut then stars in the Milky Way

Updated: Jul 22, 2020

Humans are made of complex organisms called cells, each cell with their own structure and function. There are about 30 trillions human cells with “specialized” 200 different types of cells in the body that have different structure, size, shape, and function. For examples red blood cells (erythrocytes), skin cells, neurons (nerve cells), fat cells, etc. All the cells work together to keep the human body running efficiently.

But we human are never alone, scientists estimate that the number of bacterial cells in the human body exceeds the number of human cells. It is now believe the ratio is close to 1.3:1 (about 53%) so about half of our body is not even human.

Now hear this, I was reading an article with a picture of what looks like a zillion stars taken at Cook Island, reminded me of the irony of Van Gogh’s and his Starry Starry Night. Article said experts estimated that there are about 100 to 400 billions stars on our Milky Way. I read that and it strike me that, compare to the size of the galaxy, size of our gut is actually way far from being comparable, but our gut host almost 40 trillions microbes. Our gut host more microbes that the milky way host the stars.

These microbes eat what we eat so what we eat IS important. It is our control to decide whether we take care of our good and helpful microbes by eating good food, or we take care of the bad and damaging microbes by eating bad food.

Have you ever felt butterflies in your tummy? Or grumpy after certain food? Your gut and mind are alike! In these last 5 years, research has surprised scientists that it turned out gut-mind communication are more sophisticated and powerful than we thought it was. Our gut has a brain of its own, with its own nervous system, and talks to our ENTIRE body. This conversation involves TRILLIONS of microbes including helpful bacteria, fungi, viruses and more and are constantly making nutrients for our entire body.

Miscommunication between those microbes can cause diseases such as allergy, pain, diabetes, depression, heart disease, cancer and many more...

So again… Remember… THERE ARE MORE MICROBES IN OUR BODY THAN THERE ARE STARS IN THE MILKY WAY.... Let’s treat them well to be well...
